Comparison Shopping for Building Supplies

If you?re undertaking a home improvement project, you?re going to need to pay some attention the price of necessary supplies. As is usually the case with bargain hunting, that means doing a little bit of comparison shopping.

Here?s the catch, though. You won?t find many big differences in price between common retailers unless an item happens to be on sale. Unlike many consumer goods, the price variance between retailers for business supplies is very small. One observer maintains that the prices tend to fluctuate only by one to five percent.

That doesn?t mean you should just buy what you need without looking around, though. It just means that you shouldn?t limit yourself to retailers. Talk with wholesalers. Some will only deal with licensed contractors, but others may be willing to sell you what you need at a lower price.

Consider reclaimed or used materials, too. In some situations, you can snag ?good as new? supplies at a fraction of the cost by dealing with those who reclaim old materials from demolition sites and those who traffic in ?leftover? materials from larger jobs.

A little comparison shopping can save you a great deal of money.
