Giving Up the Grass?

Most homes have lawns. The grass is a tradition. A home without that well-manicured, sprawling green space is almost unthinkable to most homeowners. You have a home, you have a lawn. End of story.

Well, some people are re-writing that story. Instead of forcing grass to grow in areas where it would rather not, they?re creating lawns designed to function within the immediate climate.

You see, the kind of grass we use in our lawns isn?t really indigenous to where many of use live. Trust me, there where no green grass lawns in Phoenix, Arizona, until folks brought them there.

Grass can grow almost anywhere, but it?s a lot more work in areas where it isn?t a natural match. By more work, we usually mean a lot more water. If you haven?t noticed, water conservation seems like a pretty good idea these days. It saves money and it saves one of our most valuable natural resources.

So, what?s the alternative to the green, green grass of home? Many homeowners are going native. They?re creating landscapes that rely on indigenous plant life instead of trying to force grass into every nook and cranny.

When it?s done right, it looks great. A good landscaper with serious knowledge of the local fauna can create a truly impressive, efficient and economical sight!
