Yes, you own your home and the property upon which it sits. That doesn?t, however, mean that you can do whatever you want to do with it. Your property is still subject to the laws of the locality, county, state an country in which it sits.
So, before you decide to build that massive two-story deck on the side of the house, start digging for your Olympic-sized pool, or begin adding a second floor to your one-story ranch house, you?re going to need to do a little homework.
Be certain that the projects you have in mind comport with local laws. Find out if you need a license for your planned improvements. Discover the rules regarding inspections and whether or not you?re required to use licensed plumbing and electrical contractors.
When you learn what you need to do to remain within the law, do it. Get your permits. Build according to the regulations. Follow the guidelines.
You?re not going to be happy when you?re told to tear down your new deck by the authorities. You won?t be happy when your enjoined from finishing that pool because you didn?t get a permit. And you don?t want to find out that adding a second story won?t stay within the laws after the roof has been ripped off your home!
